Members will have heard of the tragic loss of our President, Eric Roberts a long-standing activist and friend in our union. Eric led a full and interesting life repairing drums for the Beatles in his early days and undertaking a variety of jobs before deciding on a career in the London Ambulance Service, where he worked for 42 years. His dedication, enthusiasm and friendship will be greatly missed. Those of us who managed to attend the Regional Strategy Weekend this Autumn were fortunate enough to have met Eric and chat with him.
UNISON held a tribute to Eric on 6/7 December, the South East Region being represented by NEC members, Steve Milford, Diana Leach, Jacqui Berry, Tomasa Bullen and Lynn Poulton and Regional Secretary Maggi Ferncombe. We paid our respects and enjoyed the UNISON Choir singing You'll Never Walk Alone so fitting for a life-long Liverpool supporter! There will be a further memorial event on 8 February 2017.
The NEC decided that the best way to serve Eric's memory was to carry on with all of our campaigning work in 2017 and to raise money for his chosen Charity, MIND Blue Light this charity looks after Ambulance and other Health staff who have suffered from acute stress and mental illness, as a result of the day in day out traumatic work undertaken by our Emergency Services. We would be grateful if your Branch could make a donation to MIND Blue Light info available below.
